Farmworkers’ Rights and Preserving Small Farms: A Conversation About the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act

Our farmer, Martin Rodriguez will be participating in this panel discussion, sponsored in part by our supporting organization, The New York City Coalition Against Hunger.  This is going to be a fantastic event, so make sure to register soon!

The Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act is a New York State bill that was intended to provide fair labor protections to farmworkers who were excluded from the federal fair labor laws enacted in 1939.  The legislation’s opponents have argued that, in its current form, the bill is not fair to smaller farms, which predominate in New York State. This forum will explore how the rights of farmworkers can be ensured without endangering the livelihoods of small farmers.

Suggested donation:  $5-$20. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.  This is to cover the cost of panelists who traveled to speak at this event

DEADLINE EXTENDED! (FOR NOW)

We would love for everyone to join the Central Brooklyn CSA, and even though we cannot make that happen, we are doing our best to make sure everyone who is interested at least has an opportunity.

Great news: due to the incredible response over the last week, we are extending the deadline to join the Central Brooklyn CSA! We are proud of the opportunity our CSA provides for members of our community to eat well for less, and want to make sure everyone that is interested in becoming a member has a chance to. Having said that, vegetable shares (standard memberships) and fruit and egg shares are going fast, so if you would like to become a member, we urge you to move quickly.

We have made a commitment to make at least 40% of our shares available to members making less than $35, 000, and we are keeping that commitment. However, in fairness to all potential members, we are accepting applications on a first come, first serve basis. (In other words, if you are planning on joining, you should know that the availability of shares is impacted by your income level.)

Celebrate Earth! Festival At Brooklyn Children’s Museum

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum, New York City’s first “green” museum will celebrate the Earth during its Celebrate Earth! Festival, complete with special programs, an Eco-Fair, and family fun for all on April 24 and 25, from 11 AM- 4 PM.

During this worldwide celebratory weekend, visitors can participate in a variety of hands-on workshops that will inspire awareness of and appreciation for the planet’s resources and the ways people can care for them. With activities that explore the new green revolution, biodiversity, and sustainability practices, as part of our “go green” theme, the Museum is the place to be.


The Central Brooklyn CSA will be there with a Healthy Eating art project, information on CSAs, sign-up materials, and a few more surprises!  We hope you can make it out!
