First Distribution!

Thanks to everyone who came yesterday and made our kick-off press event and first distribution a huge success!  We had an excellent group of people, including Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham, New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH) Executive Director Joel Berg, Gail Branch Muhammad, Special Assistant to Rep. Ed Towns, and former district 36 city council candidate Mark Winston Griffith.   NY1 even stopped by to film! You can check out their piece here!

The share yesterday included a head of romaine lettuce, spinach, kale, garlic scapes, radishes, cilantro, and a choice of sage or thyme.  We grabbed some great photos as well!

Food Activists to Launch Third Innovative Project to Bring Affordable Produce Directly from Farms to Central Brooklyn

Tomorrow, Wednesday June 16th, is the official kick-off of our season!  We will be hosting a special kick-off event at Hebron SDA Church at 2 PM, where a variety of food activist leaders will be presenting our project.  Stop by and support us in this great exposure!

We will also be taking applications for sign-up.  THIS IS YOUR LAST OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE CENTRAL BROOKLYN CSA, so spread the word to friends, co-workers, and anyone you know who may be interested! Or, if you haven’t already done so, sign up yourself!

Not Sure What To Make With Your CSA Share?

Don’t worry! In addition to the great tips and recipes you’ll get from your fellow CSA members, NPR put out a great list of cookbooks highlighting easy to prepare and delicious recipes focused around eating locally.  Check it out here.

Our Partner Farm, MimoMex

Our partnering farm is MimoMex Farm, is located on 16 acres in the Black Dirt Region in the town of Goshen, New York. Goshen is situated about 46 miles from North Brooklyn, in a valley area known for its extremely fertile soil left over from an ancient glacial lake bottom.

Nestled within the bosom of the Northeast Appalachian ranges, this series of valleys is a combination of areas with rocky forest land and rich cultivatable soil that is chiefly devoted to the industry of agriculture. It is owned and operated by Martín & Gaudencia Rodriguez.

Martín & Gaudencia both grew up on farms in Mexico and have 20+ years of farming experience. They have been on their farm in Goshen for about 5 years, and own most of the land they cultivate. This will be their third year as CSA farmers; they partner with 2 other Brooklyn CSAs (Southside and Sunset Park).

MimoMex, named after Martín’s son, is a success story for the New Farmer Development Project, a program that encourages immigrants to farm in the region. The program runs a training course to teach immigrants who already have agricultural experience how to navigate the US farming industry.  MimoMex is the first graduating farm of NFDP to own its own land.
